Avocados

Avocados are an amazing food and I personally can not imagine life without them! They are what I’d call a ‘complete food’ as they’re good for everything; incorporating a good source of protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals which provide an endless list of benefits including aiding digestion, the heart, skin, brain, metabolism, and weight.

Their colour is a soft green – which is the colour of balance in nature –  a property they certainly seem to reflect in terms of their nutritional balance. They do need a bit of forward planning and management in terms of buying and ripening, to get them to that perfect to ‘eating stage’ though. Under-ripe and they’re too hard and tasteless, yet over ripe and they taste horrible! To ripen, put them next to your bananas or in a paper bag both these accelerate their ripening. If you have a few that ripen all at the same time in your fruit bowl, put them in your fridge and they’ll keep happily there for a few days.

Like many things, some of the most potent nutrients density is near to the skin, so when you peel avocados it’s important to do this in the same way as you would a banana, rather than with a knife. Now comes the best bit – the eating!

Eaten on their own with a bit of Himalayan rock salt or a drizzle of Balsamic vinegar, avocados are delicious – they’re a great addition to any salad and also delicious cooked. You can use them chopped up in soups, on rice crackers and also as a dip. A lot of people put them in smoothies but to be honest I never do – I love eating them as they are and don’t like to ‘dilute’ their flavour by mixing them with anything else. Obviously, if you don’t like the taste of them, then putting them in smoothies is a great idea! If you’re brave you can even use the stone/seed by drying it out for a couple of days, cutting into quarters and blitzing it up for smoothies and drinks.

Outside of the body, they also make a mean face mask, or so I’m told – to be honest I’ve always eaten them way before they get a chance to be on my face!
